In August, Microsoft replaced mobility with AI as one of its apex priorities. This came on the heels of the company’s possessions of AI startups Maluuba and SwiftKey and the establishment of a formal AI and research group. These moves are an attempt to position the company to be a leader in this upcoming field.

But in April 2016, Google predicted a shift from a mobile first to an AI-first world. So far, there’s still a lot of speculation about exactly what AI is.

A lot of people think it focuses on robotics and their threat to take over the workforce. The term conjures up images like those stated in the 2001 film “A.I. Artificial Intelligence,” in which a robotic young boy develops human feelings. 

Developments such as Facebook’s AI program that built its own language make that idea seem less improbable. In real life, however, AI is nothing to be afraid of. And it doesn’t strictly involve robotics. It’s actually much more than that. Today’s Article will focus primarily on trying to define what exactly Artificial Intelligence is, benefits of AI and some myths about it.

What Is Artificial Intelligence?      

AI is not new. The term was 1st used back in 1955 as the topic of a Dartmouth College conference, coined by computer science professor John McCarthy. As computer technology grew, so did robotics. In 1966, Scotland, hosted the 1st machine intelligence workshop. That was followed by the first International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence in Washington in 1969.

Natural language processing appeared in the early 1970s with a demonstrated ability of computers to recognize English sentences. Shortly after that, the Assembly Robotics group at Edinburgh University developed a robot that could use vision to find and assemble models.

Fast forward to 1997, when autonomous robotics played a vital role in NASA’s victorious landing on Mars. In the same decade, AI-based programs led to the growth of the World Wide Web. 20 years later, the AI market is hot for growth. In fact, a report by McKinsey Global Institute forecasts the market for AI technology to experience “strong growth over the next 3 years.”

But what is the definition of  AI? There is no straight definition to what exactly Artificial Intelligence is. Different Organisations have different opinions on what AI is, and what the definition of it is. Some of them are listed below.

According to Wikipedia: AI is an intelligence demonstrated by machines, as opposed to the natural intelligence displayed by animals together with humans.

According to IBM: AI leverages computers and machines to mimic the problem solving and decision making abilities of the human mind.

According to Oracle: Artificial Intelligence refers to systems or machines that mimic human intelligence to perform tasks and can iteratively improve themselves based on the information they collect.

According to Accenture: Artificial intelligence is a constellation of many different technologies working together to enable machines to sense, comprehend, act, and learn with human-like levels of intelligence.

According to SAS: Artificial intelligence makes it possible for machines to acknowledge from experience, adjust to new inputs and perform human-like functions.

According to Stanford University: Artificial Intelligence is the science and engineering of making intelligent machines, especially intelligent computer programs.

According to Amazon AWS: Artificial Intelligence is the field of computer science dedicated to solving cognitive problems commonly associated with human intelligence, such as learning, problem solving, and pattern recognition.

According to Encyclopaedia Britannica: AI is the ability of a digital computer or computer controlled robot to carry out tasks often related to intelligent beings.

According to Qualcomm: AI is an umbrella term representing a range of techniques that allow machines to mimic or exceed human intelligence.

According to Deloitte: AI is a wide field of science encompassing not only computer science but also psychology, philosophy, linguistics, and other zones.

So, as you can see, there are a lot of different definitions and versions for the definition of AI, there is no one definition for Artificial Intelligence.

What is Machine Learning? 

Machine learning, [ML] has the most focus of the 6 areas today. In fact, the term is often used interchangeably with AI, and this category received the largest share of investment in 2016: nearly 60% of all investment from outside the AI industry. The report defines machine learning as AI that “allows machines to exhibit human-like perception.”

Examples Of Artificial Intelligence: 

IBM’s Watson is a good instance of machine learning. The computer got recognition in the year 2011 when it won the game show “Jeopardy!” against two high-ranking champions. But keep in mind machines like these can not learn on their own. They’re programmed by humans.

IBM describes that “today’s machine learning uses analytic models and algorithms that learn from details, finding hidden insights without being exactly programmed where to look.”

Instances of this can be found in our everyday lives. Did you engage in a conversation session on a website? That was possibly driven by AI that followed an algorithm to locate the information you requested. When you ask Siri questions or give commands to Alexa or Google Home, you’re also accessing analytics and algorithms. Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, hasn’t been quiet about his fears of this type of AI. He stated it the “huge risk we face as a civilization.” With scenes from movies like “iRobot” in our mindset, his fears don’t seem groundless. But in the near term, AI offers a lot of benefits.

The idea behind AI, particularly machine learning, is that it can be used for monotonous, repetitive tasks, freeing people to focus on more thought intensive projects. This can be seen in automated prescription shifting over the phone, which frees pharmacists to consult with patients and fill prescriptions. Another instance is automated data systematic, which frees workers to focus on innovation.

Artificial intelligence provides numerous business benefits, across myriad industries. Some of the most noteworthy benefits of AI are:

  • Personalized experiences
  • Reduced costs
  • Targeted sales and marketing

Already, AI is being adopted to optimize sales and marketing efforts, fraud detection, credit risk scoring and customer service etc.

Some Myths About Artificial Intelligence: 
  • AI Causes Unemployment: This can be singularly called the greatest fear about AI. But it is legit. AI is replacing boring, monotonous jobs across several fields such as manufacturing, healthcare, security, privacy, customer service and many more. But it doesn’t necessarily mean that AI is creating Unemployment. AI is replacing laborious jobs which are not logical anyway and creating more High-Tech Jobs. Moreover, if AI Replaces Low Skilled Jobs, the workers need to upskill, which is beneficial for them, as well as the nation.
  • AI Is Smarter Than Humans Beings: “I think the smartest engine on the globe is the human brain and we’re not going to design a smarter AI than the human brain. AI is not sentient, it isn’t conscious, and I don’t think it will get smarter than humans.” There is no AI without Humans. We are the ones creating, editing, improving, managing, deploying, using, encouraging, Artificial Intelligence, so AI can not replace Humans entirely. Smarter the Human, smarter the AI. Besides, some decisions can only be made by Humans.
  • AI Will Make Medical and Diagnostic Decisions: One of the major efforts of AI is teaching image classifiers to recognize abnormalities like tumors. AI can scan millions of images to learn to explicate scans faster and more rigorously than any human could ever achieve. 
  • However, a doctor or radiologist will however have the final or ultimate call in determining a diagnosis. It’s just that a diagnosis might come in minutes instead of days or weeks. Therefore, it is correctly said that AI can not Replace Humans, it makes our life easier and simpler. 
  • AI and ML are the Same: AI and ML both have become a sort of Buzzword these days. People who do not know about these concepts, often use these words interchangeably. They are related, but not entirely the same. 
  • AI refers to machines exhibiting human-like behavior through different techniques. Machine learning is one of those techniques. AI aims to create machines more like humans, ML helps in making machines grasp like humans.
  • AI is Complicated: A common belief is that AI and AI systems are hard to understand and complicated. Explainable AI is appearing as a rich area of research that gives intuition into why a particular system works a certain way and helps in upgrading the transparency of decision making. 
  • It is a set of processes and methods that enables human users to comprehend and trust the outcome and output designed by machine learning algorithms. Even when the AI systems can not be entirely explained, we may still understand how they make decisions better than we know the human decision-making process. 
  • AI will Lead to Destruction: Some Hollywood Movies like Space Odyssey, The Matrix, etc. have unrealistic and sometimes frightening graphics. Because of graphics like these, individuals tend to refuse Sci-Fi Robots and AI Development. 
  • While these are possibly to happen in movies, there are many boundaries and obstacles for such things to happen in real life. If we are going to worry about AI Dominance, we might as well worry about the Sun becoming a Red Giant, Alien Invasions, Human Extinction, etc.
  • AI can Solve all Business Problems: We need to understand one thing. AI is not a Magic Wand. It is no Pixie Dust, nor magical spice. It can’t eradicate and mitigate all your problems. AI might aid you to lead an easy, and if I might say so, lazy life. But AI is not like what some movies may portrait. 
  • We can make trained AI models to help solve some problems, but it can not be a one stop solution for everything. AI is like a tool, as you use a tool whenever you want to use it, similarly, you can use AI whenever you need it, but AI is not a genie lamp.

It holds the potential to streamline the time it takes to receive medical test results, lessen the number of misdiagnoses and even track our health in real time.
