Amarnath Yatra: At least 16 people have died as a result of a flash flood that was caused by a cloudburst on Friday afternoon. There are still about 40 persons missing.

Jammu: The Amarnath Yatra in Jammu has been postponed due to bad weather, according to officials, and no fresh groups are permitted to travel from this location to the camp sites of the 3,880-metre-high cave shrine in the southern Kashmir Himalayas.

On June 30, the 43-day annual pilgrimage began from the twin base camps of Nunwan-Pahalgam in Anantnag, in south Kashmir, and Baltal in Ganderbal, in central Kashmir.

According to the government, more than 100,000 people have worshipped at the cave shrine where the naturally formed ice “shivling” is situated.

Since Lt. Governor Manoj Sinha waved off the first batch of pilgrims on June 29, a total of 69,535 have departed in 10 batches from the Bhagwati Nagar base camp in Jammu for the Valley.

The yatra is scheduled to finish on August 11 on the occasion of Raksha Bandhan.

A bus carrying pilgrims to Amarnath had fallen into a narrow valley near Ramban district on July 16, 2017. In addition, this accident on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway injured over 19 worshipers. They were all on their way to see Baba Barfani when the disaster happened to the bus.

On July 12, 2018, while on the Amarnath Yatra, a truck parked on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway collided with a van carrying pilgrims to Amarnath, injuring 13 of them. About 30 pilgrims also passed away in 2019 between July 1 and July 26, and the Shrine Board attributed this to lack of knowledge, according to reports from the Amarnath Yatra.
